How does the "split season" work?
RVSC runs two separate seasons: a Fall season (registration June/July) and a Spring season (registration January/February). Our format for the seasons changed as of June 2020 and you will need to register separately for each of the seasons. Please note the cost is $45 per season and scholarships are available if needed as are family discounts (automatically done if you register all your children on the same account). The $3 service fee is per transaction (charged by Sports Connect, not our club).
How do I determine what age group my child will be in?
RVSC goes by the age of the participant on September 1 for both fall and the subsequent spring seasons. During online registration, as long as the birthdate for the player is correct, the website will only give you the option of registering for the correct age group. Soccer classifies age groups as U# where U stands for "Under" and # (say 7) means 7 years old. If the child is "under 7" on September 1, he/she will fall into that age group. If he/she turns 7 on August 26, he/she will qualify as "under 9" age group. While we encourage players to stay within their birth-date determined age group, there are rare situations where a player can move up. This does require board approval and it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED the player attend pre-season skills check (U9, U11, U14) to ensure they are a good fit to move up. It is general among all youth sports that a player cannot "play down" an age group. Please register the player in their available age group and write in a request in the registration process. Requests are not guaranteed.
How are teams put together?
It is the goal of our recreational club to create teams that will compete well with each other, not to have an "all star" team. That said, the criteria used includes equal numbers of boys and girls on each team, a balance in oldest/youngest for the age group, a balance in skill levels and experience. We gain some of this information from parents accurately completing the registration form. The skill level is the most difficult to determine. For age groups U5 and U7, we simply do our best to balance gender, age, and experience reported. For U9, U11, and U14, the board puts on a pre-season SKILLS CHECK where players are run through drills and experienced coaches rate skills in specific areas assigning a "strength" number. These numbers are used when team forming in addition to the above parameters. Team formation is a group effort with purposeful avoidance of having a single board member develop the teams.
How are coaches selected?
Coaches are all volunteer. Anyone can volunteer to coach and all must complete AAU certification which includes a background check. We collect coach registrations right along with player registrations. If we do not have enough coaches - a common occurrence in a recreational league - we start recruiting parents, adult siblings, past high school players, and past coaches. With this volunteer and recruitment process, we do end up with a variety of experience levels for coaches.
